Sheesh. What a weekend.
First, our $35 lawnmower we bought off craigslist died, completely, fully. (This is San Antonio, where you still mow your lawn in November. It is 80 degrees out, after all.)
Salem’s balloon that she got from the park blew away while at Hyrum’s soccer game. Not surprising, but rather tragic for her.
Then Saturday evening, I was craving ice cream (one of those very pregnant, primal cravings, like, “I NEED ice cream, NOW”). I had zero energy to go to the store. So I sent Joseph. It was to be a quick run to the store (it’s just 5 minutes away). Everyone was in bed except Salem. An hour passed. He hadn’t taken his phone & I was starting to look at the clock every minute or two.
Then my crazy, irrational pregnant/motherly/wifely intuition kicked in & I started imagining all the awful things that could have happened to him. He had been gone nearly an hour & a half–that wasn’t like Joseph. A car crash? A mugging? A shooting? The possabilities only got crazier & crazier as I sat & stewed.
I grabbed Salem, decided the kids would be fine (they were safely tucked in bed) & got into the car.
Though there was a problem.
One of the automatic sliding doors would not shut. I tried everything, but it wouldn’t shut. So I took it off the automatic setting & yanked as hard as I could. And the door fell off. Not quite off, but it came out of the car. I’m not that strong, people. What a piece of junk. Honda, I hate you. I nearly cried. Not to mention my blood pressure.
I jimmy rigged it so that it was half-way closed. After all, Joseph was most likely laying on the side of the freeway & I had to go rescue him. I sped down the road, looking for Joseph’s car, my heart racing. Only a few minutes into the drive, Joseph passed me–in his car, alive. I honked, he pulled over. I yelled at him, sooo grateful he was okay, but mad at the whole situation. Turns out there was a really long line at H.E.B. where he did get a few things, but they didn’t have any non-dairy ice cream so he had to run to Wal-mart to get my stuff. We went home, ate ice cream & watched an old Alfred Hitchcook movie. Which, I inevitably fell asleep half way through.
What else?
Salem smashed a whole tube of lipstick into the handle of the driver’s side of our minivan. I woke up this morning to discover our outdoor freezer had been left open & everything had defrosted. Oh boy, oh boy.
It’s a new week though.
Lots of good stuff to share:
♥ The 7 things you’re not supposed to talk about in social situations–periods, diet, health, sleep, dreams, route talk. So interesting (I especially loved the diet & health bits).
♥ This interview with Terri Gross & Chris Hadfield about life in space–my favorite quote from Hadfield: “”You don’t get up there by being uncaring and blase. And whatever gave you the sense of tenacity and purpose to get that far in life is absolutely reaffirmed and deepened by the experience itself.”
♥ Loved all your thoughts on last week’s post on making a good marriage better. I especially loved Laurie’s comment: “I suppose I thought everyone was mildly unhappy or stressed out about their relationship every day. I never even wanted to get married…until I met my husband. He’s not perfect, I’m not perfect, but we’re perfect for each other”–what an awesome thing to discover!
♥ In case you missed it–my best of Thanksgiving recipes & check out the virtual vegan potluck–my first time participating! My entry: roasted beet quinoa salad with sweet potato cranberry chutney. The fun thing is that all the submissions are linked, so you can start from the beginning & click through all 100 submissions, you know, in your spare time.
♥ The bring joy tote has arrived! Enjoy a little savings, if you order before November 30–details here.
