{Guest Post} Frock Files: Fall Fashion Staples

I’m excited to end the week with some style notes from my friend Joy Uyeno.

Joy & I met through Alt Summit.

I think fate brought us together because there were at least 30 or 40 other people in the few classes we took together, but we happened to click (this was all online, mind you) & became fast friends.

I think it’s because we both have an appreciation for the good things in life.  Joy has a simple, elegant taste that I admire.

She is thoughtful (her tweets & emails have many a time brightened my day).  Talented (she’s also a writer, knows graphic design) & beautiful (I covet her luscious, long locks).  The kind of friend you want to be totally jealous of, but you just can’t because they are so sweet.  That’s Joy.

Hi, I’m Joy!

Over at Frock Files, I write about making the most of fashion, food, and friendship with simplicity.

My philosophy is this: if you spend too much time fussing over the small stuff, you’ll miss out on so many important moments. That’s why I like to keep things as simple as possible, while still living a fashionable, delicious, and connected life.

Since so many of you are (hot!) busy mamas, I thought I’d do a style post on putting together an autumnal outfit that’s chic and, most importantly, quick and easy.

I believe in having at least one dressed up outfit for each season, so that you don’t have to think too hard about what to wear to a party, important meeting, or on date night. The best thing about a look like this one is that it’s made up of two very basic pieces, which can easily be mixed and matched with other shoes, jewelry, bags, and accessories.

Dress: Banana Republic / Boots: Coach / Scarf: H&M / Purse: Old Navy / Earrings: Forever 21

{All pieces are from past season, but see below for similar items that are currently on the rack}

Dress: Shoptiques
Earrings: Forever 21
Scarf: Nordstrom
Purse: Piperlime
Boots: Piperlime

Long sleeved black dress: A little black dress can take you so far when it comes to fashion. Having a long sleeved frock of any neutral color will act as a solid foundation for your fall wardrobe because it can so easily be built upon. I favor dresses almost all the time, as they can be dressed up or down and generally camouflage any unflattering areas better than separates.

Boots: One of the biggest keys to building a stylish but simple wardrobe is choosing one or two pairs of shoes that will go with everything for each season. Boots are also a staple in my cool weather wardrobe, mostly because my toes are always cold, and they look good with just about everything. I’m a big advocate of investing in one or two great pairs of boots and wearing them to death.

Scarf: Scarves are a fantastic way to change up a look, both with print and with the style in which you choose to wear them. Wendy Nguyen created an amazing video tutorial showing dozens of ways to wear a scarf, which I believe is a must-see as we enter into the cooler months. To get this look, choose a big square scarf, fold it in half to make a triangle, and criss cross the ends at the nape of your neck, hiding the ends behind the bib area in front.

In short, invest in a couple of basic pieces this season (or dig through your closet to find ones you’ve forgotten about), and you’ll save yourself on any occasion in which you need to look your best.

Thanks to Janae for giving me the opportunity to share this style post with you!

A writer living in north of Boston by way of Honolulu, London, and Portland (Oregon), Joy blogs at Frock Files.

Before becoming a blogger, she wrote a travel column for a newspaper, & various pieces for magazines like Honolulu, Leader, Adventure Journey.

Early on, she inherited the gift of functionality from her mom — does it do anything to make your life better?  No?  Then let it go.  Yes?  Then invest in it. In her life, she strives to eliminate as much of the “extra” stuff as possible so that she can devote herself to the relationships and projects that enrich life.
