Aren’t these pretty? $1 worth of sour cherries: a little sour, a little sweet, and oh so lovely.
This past Saturday, my husband and I, packed the kids in the stroller (we have a triple stroller!) and walked downtown to our local Farmer’s Market.
Every week is a bit different, and with any farmer’s market, there’s a certain type of crowd that it attracts–a little hippy, a little granola, and a whole lot of fun. The atmosphere appeals to my artsy side, and I feel more connected with people when I buy produce and handmade goods grown or made by the person themself. As much as we all like getting a good deal at Wal-mart, I think we all crave a little more human connection when purchasing goods. Not to mention the fact that you can buy organic, local, in-season produce straight from the farmer, at much better price than you’d be able to anywhere else.
Last year at this farmer’s market, the vendors were few, and the turn out was spotty. It was still fun to go, however, and see what might show up. This year though, to my surprise (first time this year since we’d been gone the first part of summer), there were two or three times more vendors, live music, a car show, and a ton of people swarming around. The booths were eclectic and unique.
My favorites:
- The barbecue sauce man. I thought I died and went to heaven after sampling his honey chipotle and cranberry bourbon sauces. Since I live for flavor (and lots of it!), I’m of the opinion you should eat a bit of food with your sauce…
- A little stand of handmade headbands, necklaces, and other frilly vintage accessories. I love feminine, unique impractical items that make me feel just a little more girly, or is it womanly?
- A table set up by a woman selling sour cherries. I love local produce, and how more local can you get then this? You cannot buy sour cherries at the store (that I know of). I think this was partly why I liked them so much. I bought a $1’s worth, wish I would have bought more, but I only took $10 with me and had spent $9 of it on the first booth I went to (the vinatage jewlery vendor)…I suppose next time I’ll walk around and look at everything FIRST.
